Pen and Pause provides resources and services for kids and adults, including writing tutoring and editing/proofreading services. At the forefront of our philosophy is the concept of the powerful pause: pausing, reflecting, and using a growth mindset consistently during the writing process. Too often, students feel that rushing through a draft is the only choice for productivity and completion; we counsel and guide them to honor the process and each important step.
Joanna has been a high school English teacher in public schools for 22 years, where she has taught a variety of courses and student ability levels. She has worked extensively with juniors and seniors on college essay composition, and with all students on academic and personal writing. Joanna also served for two years as English Curriculum and Instruction Leader for grades 5-12 in a public school district, overseeing the creation and implementation of English curriculum and coaching and providing feedback for a group of 20 English teachers.
When raising small kids, Joanna worked part-time at a local college with undergraduate students as an academic coach and adjunct English Composition instructor. Supporting students in a 1:1, individualized model has always brought her great joy.
She holds a BA from Providence College and an MAT from Emmanuel College, as well as a professional teaching license in the state of Massachusetts.
